You're a human who get a digivice and is suddenly teleported to the Digital World where you're given the task of defeating the ultimate evil of the Digital World and restoring a town of digimon to it's former glory. You have to feed, train, clean up after (yes your digimon poop), and take care of all other health aspects of your digimon partner which digivolves depending on how you take care of it. One of my favorite classic PSX games.

Not many games offer the gameplay style of Digimon World. You train your Digimon partner, and he fights on your behalf. Players of other monster training games may immediately think of Pokemon, but Digimon World is completely different.
For the most part, you only have general control over the battle. In some rare cases (depending on how you raised your Digimon) you can designate exactly what move you want your partner to use, but for the most part your Digimon fights with it's own AI. This creates a gaming scenario where you're actually cheering your partner on from the sidelines, and occasionally throwing out support items. While on paper this might seem a boring concept for a game, the actual implementation is done quite well with a nice variety of Digimon.
Players are forced to raise new Digimon due to the Digimon's short lifespan (yes, they die over time), and this really keeps the game from getting stale by having 1 strong Digimon defeating everything. As the game progresses you'll get access to better training machines and shops, leading up to one of the hardest dungeons I've seen in a game.
While it may not be a popular as the Pokemon games, or faithful to the Digimon Anime, any fan of either should check this game out. It is, in my opinion, the greatest Digimon game ever made.
